In close cooperation with producers, Lenzing AG has developed environmentally sustainable nets for fruits and vegetables made from LENZING™ Modal fibers of botanic origin and certified as compliant with recognized safety standards for food contact. Responsibly produced in line with Lenzing’s commitment to sustainability, these vibrantly colored nets are becoming increasingly popular as a compostable substitute for plastic bags and nets, which are derived from non-renewable sources and contribute to the pollution of the environment.
- botanic origin: LENZING™ Modal fibers are mainly manufactured from natural and renewable beech wood, sourced from sustainable forests in Austria and neighboring countries, and harvested from certified and controlled
sources following the stringent guidelines of the Lenzing Wood and Pulp Policy. LENZING™ Modal fibers have earned United States Department of Agriculture BioPreferred® designation.
- biodegradable and compostable: LENZING™ Modal standard fibers are certifoed as
compostable and biodegradable within weeks under industrial, home, soil and marine conditions.
- food contact: LENZING™ Modal standard fiber types have been certified for food contact compliance according to: • EU Regulations 1935/2004 and 10/2011, • U.S. FDA 21 CFR §176.170 and CFR §176.180 and • German Foodstu s and Animal Feed Code — LFGB
- low environmental impact: This new packaging solution bears significantly positive environmental impact.
According to Higg MSI, cradle to LENZING™ Modal fiber production for nets results in 60% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil-based PE granulate production for standard plastic nets. Other environmental benefits include the complete avoidance of microplastics.
