Citrus Fruits in Turkey
Turkey benefits of very good climatic and ecological conditions which enhance the potential for the production of many fruit and vegetable varieties, and particularly the citrus fruit cultivation. In 2013 Turkey’s citrus production was 3,6 million tons ranking Turkey 9th considering the world citrus production.
 
80 % of Turkey’s citrus fruit is grown on the Mediterranean Coast, where the Mediterranean Exporter Unions is settled and therefore this region owns an important place in our country regarding fresh fruit and vegetable exportations. Citrus orchards dwell on approximately 80.000 hectares, the main places of production being Mersin, Adana and Hatay in the region of Çukurova where 90 % of Turkish lemons, 99 % of Turkish grapefruit, 64 % of oranges and 61 % of mandarins are produced.
 
During these last 25 years, citrus cultivation has shown important developments and is expected to increase in the next years with a good development of the infrastructure (packinghouses, concentrated and tinned citrus plants, cold and frozen storage and terminal) as well as in transportation by sea, by air and by road.
 
Main citrus varieties produced in Turkey: in the year 2013 about 3,6 million tons citrus fruit were produced. The breakdown by variety is as follows: easy peelers: 942.226 tons, orange: 1.781.258 tons, lemon: 726.283 tons, grapefruit: 228.799 tons.
 
In 2014, citrus exports rose to 1,5 million tons. Turkey exported 646.108 tons easy peelers and 181.230 tons grapefruits. As for lemons and oranges, the export figures were respectively 414.051 tons and 344.078 tons.

The Mediterranean Exporter Associations, settled in Mersin- in the Southeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey, is leading the function of Turkish Coordinator for Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Sector. It has currently about 2.956 members exporting fresh fruit & vegetables out of a total of 15.000 members from other sectors.

Turkey’s fresh fruit & vegetable production is approximately 52 million tons of which is 30 million tons vegetables and 22 million tons fruits.

Turkey’s fresh fruit and vegetable export amounts 4,5 million tons in 2018. Total value of the export have reached 2.3 billion $. Within the sector; exports of citrus fruit have been 2 million tons while fresh fruit exports have been 1.1 million tons and fresh vegetable export have been 1.3 million tons. The revenue derived from exports of these commodity groups have been 893 million $ for citrus fruits, 825 million $ for fresh fruits and 593 million $ for fresh vegetables.

Turkey exports most of its fresh fruit and vegetable to Russian Federation. This market constitutes a 28% market share of Turkey’s total fruit and vegetable export with 659 million $. Iraq is the second important market with 10 % market share with 242 million $. Germany is the third important market with 204 million $ fresh fruit and vegetable export with 9% market share. Romania, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia are the other important export markets of Turkey.
