Product description

Coop's "Miini Region" seal of quality distinguishes products which, thanks to their regional production, secure jobs in all areas of Switzerland and offer added ecological value thanks to short transport distances. The "Miini Region" seal of approval shows consumers simply and transparently which products come directly from their region. In order to ensure transparency towards customers throughout Switzerland, producers are encouraged to deliver their products appropriately packaged and labelled.

Challenge
The packing of the asparagus bundles by the producer is purely manual work. The asparagus are held together with rubber bands. A pre-printed insert label takes on the role of information carrier. Due to the time pressure - around 30,000 bundles of asparagus have to be packed within the two-month harvesting period - the precious vegetable asparagus is repeatedly damaged. This in turn generates rejects and loss of yield.
In summary, three central questions arise:
  • How can the packaging of asparagus be accelerated?
  • How can rejects and loss of yield be minimized at the same time?
  • How can the demands made by the customer on the packaging design be implemented?
Solution
The employees of the asparagus producer continue to pre-sort the asparagus manually. There are bunches of 500 g each of white and green asparagus. Manual strapping with a rubber band and additional labelling is no longer necessary: Both work steps are carried out by an ATS banding machine, which can easily handle dirt and moisture. The pre-sorted bundles of asparagus are placed by the employees on the height-adjustable work surface of the banding machine. The banding process is triggered by the foot switch and takes only a fraction of a second. The design of the banding is determined by the recipient - in this case Coop. The design process and the prior printing of the banding are carried out by the specialists at ATS-Tanner. The vegetable producer receives the right banderole in the right quantity. Further information such as the harvest date, the name of the vegetable producer, place of production etc. is printed on the up to 100 mm wide band during the banding process - also according to the customer's specifications.

And the two-month harvest period? Two ideas:
  • Our banding machines can be rented temporarily if required. Larger investments are therefore not necessary.
  • Our banding machines are flexible and can also be used for banding other fruit and vegetables.
Benefits
  • Automatic banding makes the packaging process much more efficient and less error-prone.
  • The design and printing of the banding is carried out by ATS-Tanner specialists.
  • Banding is gentle on the product. This means significantly less injured asparagus and thus less waste and loss of yield.
  • Simple operation of the banding machine by the employees. No training necessary.
  • The banding machine is mobile and can easily be used at other locations.
  • Within the Coop range "Miini Region" with over 3,000 regional products, asparagus now also has a convincing uniform appearance.
